Reader in European History, Brunel University London

Dr Alison Carrol's work focuses on the history of borders, and how they have shaped people's experiences in the past. She is especially interested in where our ideas about borders come from and the ways that they have been used and manipulated- both in the past and the present. Alison is the author of 'The Return of Alsace to France, 1918-1939' (Oxford University Press, 2018), and is currently working on a long history of the idea of the Channel Tunnel, tracing the proposals for and imagining of a tunnel under the English Channel in France and Britain in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Alison lives and works in London, where she is Reader in European History at Brunel University London. She was previously Lecturer in Modern History at Birkbeck, and Junior Research Fellow at Murray Edwards College, University of Cambridge and is a past Visiting Fellow of the Institute of European Global Studies (University of Basel).
