Amelia Noor-Oshiro

My goal is to advance scientific knowledge on how to prevent suicide among early adults who are minoritized in domestic and global contexts. I am trained as a social and behavioral scientist using public health, community-based, and grassroots social justice approaches to understand how exposures to structural oppression, trauma, and violence relate to inequities in mental health among oppressed populations. In particular, I focus on suicide prevention and etiology in groups that identify with multiple stigmatized identities (e.g., immigrant, ethnic/racial minority, faith minority). As a brown Muslim woman, I provide critical analysis to the media and to people on the ground in regard to suicide through the lens of critical theory, lived experience, scientific research, and traditional storytelling with the intention to promote life and foster community healing.
