James J. Stansell Assistant Professor of Classics and Humanities, San Diego State University

My research and teaching interests range widely across ancient and modern literature with a particular focus on the topic of violence (physical, rhetorical, metapoetic) in the arts and in the public sphere. I have published articles and book chapters on Homer's Iliad, Lucan's Bellum Civile, Silius Italicus' Punica, Prudentius' Psychomachia, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, and American rapper Lil Wayne's oeuvre. I have work forthcoming on the fall of Jerusalem in Josephus' works, and on metapoetry in Virgil's Georgics and Aeneid. My book, Abused Bodies in Roman Epic, was recently published by Cambridge University Press (2019).
