Dr Andrew Thompson is a professor of youth mental health and a consultant Psychiatrist. He leads the early psychosis research stream at the Early Psychosis Prevention and Intervention Centre (EPPIC) at Orygen and is the lead psychiatrist and research lead for the national headspace Early Psychosis services. He holds an honorary Associate Professor position at the University of Warwick in the UK.
Andrew completed his medical degree at the University of Oxford and a research MD at the University of London. He trained as a psychiatrist both the UK and Australia obtaining fellowships in both countries and received the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists Young Psychiatrist Research Award in 2013.
He has received major research funding in Australia and the UK including for the development of a national network for early psychosis research (AEPCC).
Andrew’s major academic interests include work into risk factors for developing psychosis and novel interventions to treat early or emerging psychosis including using technology such as virtual reality. He is also interested in defining and understanding predictors of clinical outcomes in early psychosis.
