Researcher and Administrator, The University of Queensland

Dr. Angelo Macaro is a sports and exercise scientist with extensive experience in coaching athletes across a broad spectrum of disabilities and sports. He completed his PhD at the University of Queensland, School of Human Movement and Nutrition Sciences, where he collaborated with a multidisciplinary team to develop Para START (Sports Training And Research Team), a longitudinal program dedicated to exploring the effects of performance-based training on clinical and sport outcomes for people with disabilities who have high support needs. Angelo continues to collaborate with this team, and his research has advanced the understanding of specialized sports science strategies, providing valuable insights that inform coaching practices for para swimmers with cerebral palsy.

Beyond his research interests, Angelo remains dedicated to increasing sports participation for people with disabilities. At Sporting Wheelies, one of Australia’s pioneering community-based health and fitness organisation for people with disabilities, he plays a central role in administering para sport programs, including those tailored for hospital settings such as spinal and brain injury units. Additionally, Angelo is actively involved in organizing regional, state, and national-level tournaments across a variety of sports, including Wheelchair Rugby, Wheelchair Basketball, Boccia, Goalball, and Para Powerlifting.
