Antoni Hernández-Fernández

Antoni Hernández-Fernández has been an assistant professor of Physics and Educational Science at the Institute of Education Sciences (ICE-UPC) since 2008. He has also been a part-time teacher in Secondary School and Vocational Training at the Terrassa Art and Design School since 1997. He has degrees in Physics (1997) and Linguistics (2003) and received his doctorate in Cognitive Science (Linguistics) from the Universitat de Barcelona (UB) in 2014. His current research interests include education in a broad sense (gamification, project-based learning, technology education, etc.) and quantitative linguistics, i.e. the study of general patterns in communication systems (Zipf’s law for word frequencies, Menzerath’s law, etc.).

He is a member of the LARCA research group and his recent publications in this group include “Emergence of linguistic laws in human voice” (Scientific Reports, 2017) and "On the physical origin of linguistic laws and
lognormality in speech" (Royal Society Open Science, 2019). About teaching science and technology, he has recently published “Does like seek like? The formation of working groups in a programming project” (JOTSE, 2017), on the topic of pair programming, and “Disclosure day on relativity: a science activity beyond the classroom” (WJET, 2017), which describes research on oral communication and the communicative abilities of students.

He is an expert in popular science, the author of the first biography of Enrico Fermi in Spanish (RBA, 2012), which has been translated into four languages, editor of the first edition in Catalan of "Filosofia de la Tecnologia", by Mario Bunge (2019) and also the co-author of more than 30 books on technology, physics and mathematics for secondary schools (whose publishers include Castellnou, Pearson, Edelvives, Edebé, Aulaplaneta and Casals). He is a member of the Catalan Technology Society (Institut d'Estudis Catalans"), the Catalan Association for Scientific Dissemination (ACDIC) and the International Quantitative Linguistics Association (IQLA).
