Assistant Professor of Sociology, University of Hawaii

I am a professor of sociology and an interdisciplinary scholar specializing in penal history. My central research focus is understanding how prisons became institutionalized in the American penal landscape. My book, The Deviant Prison, a history of the distinctive Philadelphia prison, Eastern State Penitentiary (1829-1913), will be available in late 2020 through Cambridge University Press.
