Assistant Professor of Sociology, University of Hawaii

I am a professor of sociology and an interdisciplinary scholar specializing in penal history. My central research focus is understanding how prisons became institutionalized in the American penal landscape. My book manuscript, a history of the distinctive Philadelphia prison, Eastern State Penitentiary (1829-1913), is under contract with Cambridge University Press.
