Ashwanee Budoo-Scholtz

After completing my LLB at the University of Mauritius, I pursued my LLM in Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa at the Centre for Human Rights, University of Pretoria and I focused on migrant children in Mozambique for my mini dissertation. Following my LLM, I taught part-time at the University of Mauritius before starting my doctoral degree in January 2014 at the University of Pretoria. During my doctoral degree, I developed a gender budgeting framework that can be adopted by the African Union to ensure that African countries implement their obligations to allocate sufficient budgetary resources to realise women's rights. During the same time, I was attached to the gender unit of the Centre for Human Rights where I was responsible for multi-stakeholders' child marriage dialogues and was assisting with projects concerning state reporting under the African Women's Rights Protocol. I have also assisted in the preparation of shadow reports to the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights and in the development of general comments on child marriage which have been jointly adopted by the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights and the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child. Currently, in addition to my project, I am also involved with the African Human Rights Competition and the Nelson Mandela Human Rights Moot Court Competition organised by the Centre for Human Rights.
