Ayşegül Akdemir

Lecturer in Sociology, MEF University

Ayşegül Akdemir is an assisstant professor at Istanbul Gedik University. Upon completing her BA in Sociology from the Boğaziçi University in 2009, she received a masters scholarship from DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) and TEV (Turkish Educational Foundation) and earned her MA in Conflict Studies from Universität Augsburg, Germany in 2011. She completed her PhD in Sociology at the University of Essex in 2016 with her dissertation titled “Alevis in Britain: Emerging Identities in a Transnational Social Space”. She has publications about the Alevi community in Britain and their transnational identity building process. Currently she is conducting research on Women’s Empowerment in Alevi Organisations in Istanbul, funded by Koç University Gender Studies Centre (KoçKam). She speaks English and German.
