Bertie Vidgen

Dr Bertie Vidgen is Head of Online Safety in the Turing’s public policy programme, where he leads the Online Harms Observatory and Online Harms Survey. His main research interests are the use of Artificial Intelligence to find, monitor and stop content and activity that creates a risk of serious harm, such as hate speech, misinformation, extremism and bullying.

Bertie has been a specialist adviser to the Draft Online Safety Bill Joint Committee in UK Parliament (2021) and an advisor to DCMS’ Online Safety Data Initiative (2021). He is co-organiser of the Workshop on Online Abuse and Harms and a visiting researcher at the University of Oxford. He has worked extensively with DCMS, Ofcom and a range of civil society organisations and tech companies. Previously, he was a visiting research fellow at the Open University and completed his PhD at the University of Oxford. Outside of the Turing, Bertie is CEO and co-founder of Rewire Online, a startup building socially responsible AI for online safety.
