Billie Jeanne Brownlee

ESRC Postdoctoral Fellow, University of Exeter

I am an ESRC Postdoctoral Fellow at Institute for Arabic and Islamic Studies at the University of Exeter. My current postdoctoral research project looks at the micro-politics of refugee crisis management with a specific focus on the case of Lebanon’s municipalities. My PhD research studied the development of the new media and civil society in the Middle East, with a particular attention to Syria. I have published several peer-reviewed articles and book chapters on the Arab uprisings and the politics of new media and I hold a PhD in Middle East Politics at the University of Exeter. My broader intellectual and academic interest fall within the field of social movements, media politics and studies of displacement. Beside my academic work, I have also been employed as junior officer at the European External Action Service, Crisis Response Division in Brussels.
