Biruk Terrefe is a Departmental Lecturer in African Politics at the University of Oxford. His research broadly focuses on the politics of authoritarian state-building with a focus on infrastructure projects and contested urban spaces in the Horn of Africa. His recent work has been on the Ethiopian state and the tensions between the ruling party’s centralised developmental ambitions and the federated architecture of the state.
