Professor of Marketing, University of Otago

My research spans three broad areas – marketing, strategy and entrepreneurship. I am best known internationally for research into market orientation. Other areas of expertise include service branding (with an award winning article in the Journal of Marketing Management in 2006), corporate reputation (I co-edited a special edition of the Australasian Marketing Journal in 2009), and business education. I have also published research into international marketing, including a 1997 article in the Journal of International Business Studies, the top-ranked journal in its field.

After being appointed the Dunedin City Chair in Entrepreneurship in 2007 I established a Centre for Entrepreneurship that spans teaching and research (in February 2013 our Master of Entrepreneurship degree won the United States Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship “Outstanding Emerging Entrepreneurship Program Abroad Award”). In September 2012 I relinquished my role as Chair of Entrepreneurship and returned to the Department of Marketing.

Recent research activities include the commercialization of innovations, sustainable entrepreneurship, and entrepreneurship education. In 2010 I co-edited special editions of the Journal of International Entrepreneurship (on links between international market knowledge, values and entrepreneurship) and International Review of Entrepreneurship (on experiential entrepreneurship education). I am currently conducting research into community-led sustainable entrepreneurship in the Pacific Islands.
