My PhD research is focused on modernising Australian cold and heated water service design in Multi-level residential buildings. The key research outcome is to improve the estimation of peak demand experienced in multi-level residential buildings. Alongside the estimation of peak demand, research will aid in developing a stronger understanding of daily water usage to assist hydraulic practitioners in the design and selection of plumbing hardware. Because the current methods presented in the current Australian plumbing standards are known to over-estimate peak demand, it is likely this work will lead to a reduction in size of plumbing components. Whilst this is a commercially attractive objective, my research will undertake a systematic review of a reduced system size considering: 1) water hammer sensitive design 2) Lifecycle cost and optimisation 3) Water quality to identify any unintended consequences.
