Bruce Sutherland

Professor of Physics, University of Alberta

Bruce Sutherland studies the dynamics of the atmosphere, ocean and estuaries though laboratory experiments, numerical simulations and mathematical theory. His research focuses upon waves, currents, and convection, recently focusing upon how these influence particle transport, sedimentation and resuspension.

After receiving his PhD in 1994 working in the atmospheric dynamics group in the Department of Physics at the University of Toronto, he was a Research Associate in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics at the University of Cambridge untii his appointment in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Alberta in 1997. He is presently a Professor jointly appointed in the Departments of Physics and in Earth & Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Alberta.

In addition to his research and teaching, he is an Associate Editor of the journal Physical Review Fluids.
