Dr Howarth is a Senior Research Fellow at the Global Sustainability Institute (GSI) at Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge specializing in climate change engagement, communication, policy and sustainable behaviour change. She was seconded to the International Climate Change Directorate in the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) in 2013/2014 working on stakeholder engagement on a range of policy aspects of international climate change. She is currently leading research on the co-production of climate knowledge and action, the impact of climate scepticism on public perceptions, and local engagement on climate change.
Her research interests focus on the communication of climate change by assessing barriers to action and behaviour change and limitations of the science-policy interface particularly in overcoming these at the public and decision-maker levels. She is an Honorary Research Associate at UCL’s Department of Science and Technology Studies and is a member of the UCL Policy Commission on Communicating Climate Science. She lectures on climate change policy, communication and behaviour change and is also a Guest Lecturer at the Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership and is a member of the British Sociological Association Climate Change Studies Group.
