Carmel O’Toole is a Senior Lecturer in public relations, teaching both undergraduate and postgraduate students. She is also joint course leader for the MA in Public Relations. She is a journalist and Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR) award-winning practitioner with 25 years experience in the industry. Carmel is a former local government head of communications and communications manager for Channel 4.
Also an Associate Consultant with a regional PR agency, Carmel has extensive experience of working with public and private sector organisations, advising on reputation risk and crisis PR planning and management. Current and recent clients include Serco, Channel 4, Beam, The Mersey Forest plus regional local authorities and housing associations. Carmel is a member of the National Union of Journalists, the Chartered institute of Public Relations and the Public Relations Consultants Association. Carmel is now working with Adrian Roxan on research examining the impact of social media on public sector crisis management and the need for new response paradigms.
