Professor of Political Theory, University of Southampton

Chris Armstrong is a Professor of Political Theory at the University of Southampton, where he has worked since 2005. He has degrees from the Universities of Durham, Bristol, and the London School of Economics.

Chris has held research fellowships from the ESRC, the Leverhulme Trust, and the British Academy. During 2018-19 he used a British Academy / Leverhulme Senior Research Fellowship to work on the topic of ocean justice. He has also been a visiting fellow at the University of Uppsala’s Forum on Democracy, Peace and Justice, at the University of Oxford’s Centre for the Study of Social Justice, and at the Australian National University's School of Philosophy.

Chris's work has been published in journals including the Journal of Political Philosophy, Politics, Philosophy and Economics, Political Studies, Political Theory, and Ethics and International Affairs. He is the author of Global Distributive Justice (Cambridge University Press, 2012), Justice and Natural Resources: An Egalitarian Theory (Oxford University Press, 2017, and Why Global Justice Matters: Moral Progress in a Divided World (Polity 2019). A special issue of the journal Global Justice: Theory Practice Rhetoric dedicated to his work should appear in 2020.

His research interests include normative political theory, especially distributive justice; justice, equality and egalitarianism; theories of global justice; global egalitarianism as an approach to global justice; natural resources and justice; climate justice; political membership and citizenship and the global order.
