Christine McCarthy

Christine McCarthy teaches in Interior Architecture at the School of Architecture. Her research areas include: prison architecture, architectural drawing and representation, and architectural history. She has previously held positions at the University of Auckland and the University of Otago, and given lectures at the University of Melbourne, the University of Nottingham, the University of Liverpool, the University of Alberta, University of Brighton, and Griffith University. She is on the editorial boards of Space and Culture (2002-present), Architecture and Culture (2013-present), and the Journal of Interior Design (2016-present); has peer-reviewed papers for Architectural Science Review, Architecture and Culture, Current Issues in Tourism, the European Journal of Cultural and Political Sociology, Fabrications, the Journal of Architecture, the Journal of Interior Design, Planning Perspectives, and Space and Culture, and has published in Architectural History, the Design Journal, Interiors, Engineering History and Heritage, the International Journal of Architecture and Urban Studies, the International Journal of Heritage Studies, Jouvert, and New Zealand Sociology. She was a member of the executive committee of the Society of Architectural Historians Australia and New Zealand (2003-07), the president of the Architectural Centre (2004-08; 2011-2019), a board member of the Wellington Civic Trust (2008-2009), chair of Docomomo(NZ) (2009-2012) and president of the Wellington Howard League (2018-present). She is currently editing a special issue of Space and Culture on prison architecture and is the convener of the annual New Zealand Architectural History Symposium (2004-present).
