Associate Professor of Maritime Security and Governance, US Naval War College

Curtis Bell is a political scientist with work experience both within and beyond academia. Between faculty positions at the University of Tennessee (2012-2016) and the U.S. Naval War College (2021-Present), Dr. Bell created, directed, and scaled research-driven and practitioner-oriented civil society programs that worked closely with the United Nations, International Maritime Organization, United States government, and other important stakeholders. His work has appeared in many peer-reviewed academic journals and has been featured in popular publications including the New York Times, Washington Post, and the Economist. He is an expert in maritime security, violent extremism, coups d'etat, terrorism, democratic backsliding, and political event forecasting. He has work experience on five continents, with recent engagements in countries as diverse as Argentina, Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Malta, Cambodia, and the Philippines.
