Cynthia Spada

Born in Boston, I earned my Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from the University of California, Berkeley, where I focused on twentieth-century prose in English, Japanese, and Spanish. I have taught at Berkeley and the International College of Liberal Arts in Kofu, Japan. Currently, I teach literature and writing at the University of Victoria and Royal Roads University.

My books are The Floating World: A Novel (Ballantine) and The Demimonde in Japanese Literature: Sexuality and the Literary Karyukai (Cambria Press). I am currently working on a collection of essays that explores how mental and physical illnesses intersect with the environmental crisis and social habitats. Excerpts from this collection have been published in storySouth, Witness Magazine, The Coil, The Real Story, Entropy, and B O D Y.
