Associate Professor in Epidemiology and Research Fellow, Cancer Council NSW

A/Prof Smith has published and presented extensively in cancer epidemiology in NSW, with particular focus on prostate cancer and PSA testing in Australia. He demonstrated the correlation between testing and increased disease incidence and the decline in advanced disease.

In 2000 he commenced working on the NSW Prostate Cancer Care and Outcomes Study as a chief investigator and project manager. The study has documented the long-term quality of life effects of prostate cancer treatment options and demonstrated the continued need for psycho-social and communication support for men post diagnosis with sexual and psychological issues. It has been used to shape prostate cancer testing policy in the USA (USPSTF).

A/Prof Smith is currently the recipient of a NHMRC post-doctoral fellowship exploring causes of death in men with prostate cancer an is chief investigator on an NHMRC project grant examining the effect of a psycho-social intervention in men with advanced prostate cancer. He regularly presents the results of this work to clinicians, researchers and consumers.
