Denise Thwaites is a curator and academic specialising in contemporary digital arts and humanities. Her current research explores social inclusion, exclusion and creative collaboration, especially as they are re-imagined through emergent technologies.
Building upon her PhD in Aesthetics, Denise's research integrates theoretical inquiry alongside industry and community-based creative research. Over the past 10 years, Denise has produced curatorial projects for Artspace (Sydney), This Is Not Art Festival (Newcastle), New Beginnings Refugee Culture and Arts Festival (Sydney), Firstdraft (Sydney) and Next Wave Festival (Melbourne), while working at arts organisations such as Roslyn Oxley9 Gallery, the Australia Council for the Arts and the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia. In 2017, Denise returned to academia as a Post-Doctoral Fellow at iCinema Research Centre at UNSW, before taking up her position at University of Canberra in 2019.
