Senior Lecturer and Programme Leader for the EdD programme in the School of Education, Liverpool John Moores University

I am a senior lecturer/researcher in the School of Education. My teaching and research at LJMU is focussed on psychology in education. I am involved in various research projects about innovative and multidisciplinary approaches to education and wellbeing in mainstream and secure settings and compassionate-focussed practices in education.

I originally trained as a Primary/EY teacher and taught for six years. I actively seeks ways to stay connected to my practitioner roots through research and consultancy. I am particularly interested in young children’s learning assisted by animals, learning about animals and environmental education, the perspectives of early educators regarding animal-related learning and the values associated with the teaching of animal-related themes in early childhood. My PhD thesis was about the status of animal-related and animal-assisted learning in early education settings in England. I am currently writing a book for Routledge entitled 'Animals in Early Childhood Education: Research, philosophy, ethics and practices'. I am the Chair of the Early Childhood Educational Anthrozoology (ECEA) research group (email: ECEA@ljmu.ac.uk).

I hold Chartered Psychologist status with the British Psychological Society and I am a committee member of the BPS Psychology of Education Section. I co-wrote 'Psychology and Education' (part of the Routledge Foundations of Education Studies series) ISBN 9781138783492 and co-edited 'Children and Their Education in Secure Accommodation: Interdisciplinary Perspectives of Education, Health and Youth Justice' https://www.routledge.com/Children-and-Their-Education-in-Secure-Accommodation-Interdisciplinary/Gallard-Evans-Millington/p/book/9781138694408.

I am a reviewer of proposals and manuscripts for various publishers for forthcoming texts about psychology and education.
