Lecturer in Gender Studies, University of Melbourne

Dion Kagan has lectured and course co-ordinated in Gender, Screen and Cultural Studies at the University of Melbourne and in Critical Sexuality Studies at the Australian Research Centre in Sex, Health and Society (ARCSHS), LaTrobe University. In 2014 he is coordinating the first year subject 'Introducing Gender: Sex, Sport and Film' at Melbourne University.

Dion completed a PhD in the School of Cultural and Communication that focused on HIV/AIDS in popular culture, across media forms. He has a BA (Hons) in Literary Studies and History awarded by the Arts Faculty at Melbourne University.

Outside of the academy, Dion works as an arts freelancer, critic and editor for independent local presses, and is currently an artistic programming advisor on the board of the National Young Writers' Festival. His criticism and reviews have been published in Kill Your Darlings, The Big Issue, Australian Book Review, Metro and online at Killings. He currently writes a 'queer column' for The Lifted Brow and is one of the regular voices on fortnightly culture podcast The Rereaders.
