Lecturer in Sociology and Social Policy, University of Leeds

Daniel is a Lecturer in Sociology and Social Policy at the University of Leeds, UK. Prior to this, Daniel worked for the Economic and Social Research Council, the Prime Minister’s Strategy Unit, the Centre for Analysis of Social Exclusion and the University of Oxford. His research is academic and applied in nature, focusing principally on poverty and inequality, comparative welfare policy and social citizenship. He is currently Co-Investigator on a large ESRC project, Welfare at a (Social) Distance, examining the role of social security and employment support during COVID-19 and its aftermath. Supported by the British Academy and Wolfson Foundation, Daniel also leads a new project on the changing significance of deep poverty in the UK and the varying ways in which it is distinct from the more general challenges of life on a low income (www.deep-poverty.co.uk). Drawing on a mixed methods longitudinal design, this project will generate a new evidence base on the extent, causes and consequences of deep poverty. Daniel is author of 'Welfare, Inequality and Social Citizenship: Deprivation and Affluence in Austerity Britain' published by Policy Press.
