Dr George Karystianis

Research fellow, UNSW Sydney

George obtained his Ph.D in the multidisciplinary area of Text Mining and Epidemiology from the University of Manchester (2014). He has since then designing and implementing text mining systems to identify information from various types of biomedical data (e.g., clinical narratives, epidemiological study abstracts, medication prescriptions). One of his recent systems involved the identification of biases in animal-based research which received academic acclaim. Currently, he is working within the offender health area in the Justice Health Research Program at UNSW with a domestic violence focus. In particular, he is leading a systematic effort to make use of police data for research and surveillance purposes. He participates frequently with a team of collaborators in international NLP competitions. Areas of interest include mental health, epidemiology (i.e., contagious diseases) and NLP.
