Monique Charles

Monique Charles completed her PhD at Warwick University focusing on ‘race’, spirituality, class, gender & music as it relates to #Grime. #HBTG? Her thesis is entitled:

‘Hallowed be thy Grime? : A musicological and sociological genealogy of Grime music and its relation to black Atlantic religious discourse.’ (#HBTG?)

Known as 'the Brainy, Brawny, Beautiful Blackademic', Dr Charles is a Cultural Sociologist, Theorist and Methodologist with a focus on Black music and sound, spirituality and wellness & research methods. She developed a research method to analyse and understand music for the social science and cultural studies fields (Musicological Discourse Analysis – MDA) and developed a theory on Black music and spirituality in live performance/clubbing spaces (AmunRave Theory). Dr Charles is on the Editorial Board the Global Hip Hop Studies Journal. She is passionate about building the discipline of Black British Music into university level education and is one of the first to bring Grime Music into the higher education as a serious topic of intellectual study on an international scale.

Her love of music and sound extends beyond the intellectual. She is a Sound Therapist/Healer (specialising in tuning forks, cardology and voice) she works with meditative techniques, energy and sound for healing and therapeutic purposes.
