I am a linguistic anthropologist who studies culture and communication. My research focuses on cultural aspects of communication, cross cultural communication, and narrative. My research projects include investigations into power sharing, hierarchy, visual language, inter-generational narrative, and the role of technology in influencing language practices.

My most recent book is "The Essential Questions: Interview Your Family to Uncover Stories and Bridge Generations," published by Penguin Random House

My other books include "Words Matter: Communicating Effectively in the New Global Office," University of California Press (co-authored with Sirkka Jarvenpaa), and "Power Sharing: Language, Rank, Gender and Social Space in Pohnpei, Micronesia," Oxford University Press.
