Emma Gavin is a Garrwa Aboriginal scholar from Borroloola in remote Northern Territory. Emma is an Associate Professor and the inaugural Associate Dean (Indigenous) for the Faculty of Education at Monash University. As Associate Dean (Indigenous), Associate Professor Gavin works with the Faculty Senior Leadership team to set a strategic direction for the Faculty, with respect to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and knowledges and oversees key activities pertaining to the advancement of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and communities. Emma supports the Faculty to uphold Indigenous knowledge and perspectives across education, research and engagement activities.

Emma's research is primarily in NTROs, with a focus on Indigenous methodologies, knowledges and philosophies. Emma's NTROs include filmwork, photography, Indigenous Elder and Community knowledge preservation / safekeeping, sound recordings, and exhibitions of creative work. Emma's research is community-focused and based in the Northern Territory.

Emma is also an Adjunct Associate Professor at Federation University, and supports the work of their National Centre for Reconciliation, Truth and Justice.

Emma joined Monash University in December 2022, prior to this role, Emma was Senior Lecturer and Academic Director of Indigenous Teaching and Learning at Swinburne University of Technology. Emma has an Arts background, with postgraduate qualifications in Indigenous Knowledges and International Relations and Political Science. Emma's doctoral research was a NTRO film artefact and exegesis which focused on the experiences of Indigenous HDR students in Australian universities.
