Professor of Criminology, University of Portsmouth

I am a psychologist turned criminologist, with an interest in comparative criminology, prisons, and crime and justice in the Netherlands, and the Nordic countries.

I studied psychology in Groningen (the Netherlands), received my PhD from Leiden University (the Netherlands) and joined the University of Portsmouth in 1998.

My main research interests are in comparative criminal justice, crime and justice in the Netherlands, 'crimmigration', criminal psychology and vulnerable people in the criminal justice system.

I am also interested in the role of globalisation in shaping criminal justice across the globe.
