I am an anthropologist (PhD Chicago 1992) working primarily in historical anthropology, history of anthropology, and visual and material culture. My main research areas are the Indians of North America (particularly Virginia) and Puerto Rico, and the Americanist tradition in the history of Anthropology. I am the author of Powhatan's World and Colonial Virginia: A Conflict of Cultures (Univ. of Nebraska Press, 1997), and co-editor of a number of volumes including the Histories of Anthropology Annual series. Since 2005 I have been the Curator of the Anthropology Collections at Cornell University.
