Professor of Psychology, University of York

Gareth is a Professor of Psychology and heads the Sleep, Language and Memory laboratory at York. His first degree was at Cambridge University, and he was awarded a PhD from Birkbeck College, University of London. He has established expertise in psycholinguistics and sleep/memory consolidation. He has served as action editor for three major journals in the field (currently Journal of Memory and Language) and has edited the Oxford Handbook of Psycholinguistics. He has served on grant funding panels for the EU and in the UK.

His research has been supported by grants awarded by the UK Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), Medical Research Council, Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, Waterloo Foundation, British Academy and the Leverhulme Trust, as well as by the EU and the Australian Research Council.

He has engaged with the public frequently on the benefits of sleep in language learning via news articles and national TV and radio appearances.
