Senior lecturer, Deakin University

Gaye Williams, a Senior Lecturer in Mathematics Education at Deakin University, investigated intellectual and affective quality in mathematics lessons with focus on how autonomy and spontaneity enable creative and insightful mathematical thinking. She found optimism (resilience) was crucial to creative mathematical activity. Her 2009-2012 ARC DP studied the role of optimism in collaborative problem solving in mathematics, and building problem solving capacity. This research informs her professional learning and research in schools building strength in STEM education.
