Professor in High Medieval History, Durham University

My main fields are in the history of medieval culture and religion: medieval science and natural phenomena; the making of medieval theology and the understanding of creation; monastic life; the influence of classical and patristic thinkers on later centuries; and medieval food and drink. My areas of study cover Europe (including Britain) and the medieval Islamicate. I hold degrees in both history and theology. I am PI of Ordered Universe, a project involving medieval specialists and modern scientists to re-edit, translate, analyse, and explore Robert Grosseteste's scientific works (funded in various phases from 2009 by AHRC and The Leverhulme Trust). Recent funding focuses on Islamicate thinking in medieval Christendom. Working closely with non-academic partners is a further feature of my working method: from medieval food with Blackfriars Restaurant, Newcastle to Sound and Light shows with The Projection Studio, Multi-media sculptor Alexandra Carr, and Glassmakers Colin Rennie and Cate Watkinson.
