Gretchen Harris's research has centred on star clusters, old and young, old stellar populations and what they can tell us about evolution in galaxies.

She is a past President of CASCA, served as chair of the Herzberg Institute of Astrophysics Advisory Board, member of NSERC Council and various other NSERC Committees.
