Visiting Fellow, School of History, Classics and Archaeology, Newcastle University

I've a background in ancient history & archaeology - I took my BA at Newcastle and my PhD at Durham. My PhD was about the collapse of the small Mycenaean states of Late Bronze Age Greece. In my PhD I also looked at the Roman, Classic Maya and Hittite collapses and in my 2017 book Understanding Collapse (Cambridge University Press) I was able to examine even more examples from around the world. As well as trying to find out 'what actually happened' in specific cases (and 'what didn't'), I've always been interested in how we understand and envision collapse itself.
