Honorary Research Fellow (Linguistics), Te Kunenga ki Pūrehuroa – Massey University

Hilary Smith is an Honorary Research Fellow in the School of Humanities at Massey University (Palmerston North) and an Honorary Affiliate of the College of Arts and Social Sciences, Australian National University. She is current president of ALANZ (Applied Linguistics in Aotearoa New Zealand), and Co-Convenor of the Languages Alliance Aotearoa New Zealand.

She has an applied linguistics in education background, with over 30 years of teaching and researching in New Zealand and Australia, the South Pacific, and Southeast Asia. She has lived in Tonga, Papua Guinea, Lao PDR, and Australia, and has also worked in Indonesia, Kiribati, Vanuatu, and Solomon Islands, Nepal, Thailand, and Timor-Leste. She is working on the revival of the Gamilaraay language with the Winanga-Li Aboriginal Child and Family Centre in Gunnedah, New South Wales.
