Research Fellow, University of Wollongong

Hugh is involved in research projects for the Digital Living Lab, particularly air quality and water quality. Collaborative works include studies of public space in Liverpool, water quality on the south coast of New South Wales, microplastic pollution and social media in responses to disasters. His background is in agent-based modelling, spatial data analysis, marine ecology, and web mapping. His SMART Fire Hydrants map received the 2017 Service Innovation Award (IoT category) of the Service Science Society of Australia. The map shows firefighters the locations of fire hydrants that can otherwise be difficult to find, so improves their response times to fire calls. Other areas of interest include health, quantitative ecology and theoretical evolution.
