Professor Emeritus of Astronomy, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

I have long researched the field of planetary nebulae, shells of compressed ionized gas that surround dying stars, and related areas, and am now principally interested in writing and in public education. I've written 20 boooks,120 or so research papers
and about an equal number of pop science articles in national and
international magazines, had 4 children, one wife, 7 grandchildren, 1 dog and 1 cat.
I'm a fine bread baker, cook, and was once a master sprinter who ran the 440 as it was often called back then
