James Babb has taught in universities in the United States and Japan, and writes a regular column "Who's Who in Japanese Politics" in the magazine "Insight Japan".

His research interests include comparative political thought, Japanese politics (including political history, political thought, political parties and elections), comparative politics, and research methods (hermeneutics, case studies, quantitative).
