Professor of Psychology, Massey University

Dr. James Hou-fu Liu (刘豁夫) is Professor of Psychology at Massey University. Prior to this, he taught at Victoria University of Wellington (becoming Professor and Co-Director of its Centre for Applied Cross-Cultural Research) from 1994-2014. He completed a BSc in computer science at Illinois in 1984 and worked in Los Angeles before going to UCLA to complete a PhD in Social Psychology in 1992. His research is in social, cross-cultural, and political psychology, where he specializes in social representations of history and identity politics, as well as the impact of digital mass media on political engagement and mental health. James has almost 200 publications, many of which can be easily downloaded using GoogleScholar. A naturalized citizen of two countries, he describes himself as a “Chinese-American-New Zealander”. Having served as President, Secretary General, Treasurer, and Journal Editor for the Asian Association of Social Psychology (http://asiansocialpsych.org), he is keen to promote global scholarship in the Asia-Pacific region through a philosophy of interconnectedness.
