James Hargreaves

Director, Centre for Evaluation, London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine

I am the Director of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine Centre for Evaluation. The Centre comprises a network of researchers with expertise in evaluation methods including randomised and quasi-experimental study designs and in quantitative, qualitative, systematic review, economic and participatory research methods. I oversee the strategic direction of the Centre towards its mission to improve the design and conduct of public health evaluations through the development, application and dissemination of rigorous methods, and in facilitating the use of robust evidence to inform policy and practice.

In my own research I conduct rigorous quantitative research to evaluate interventions, programmes and policies combined with mixed-methods approaches to unpick causal pathways and inform policy, mostly in low-income countries. Focus areas include in: impact and process evaluation study design, HIV epidemiology and prevention, social determinants of health and health inequalities, structural interventions, mixed-methods research, and, tuberculosis epidemiology and prevention. I am an ex-fellow of the Chatham House Centre on Global Health Security with whom I have worked on issues such as zoonosis prevention, emerging infections and public-private partnerships to foster innovations in vaccine pricing and development for low-income countries.
