James is a demographer whose current research is focused on understanding and measuring social cohesion within and across neighbourhoods. His broader research interests include:

- housing and homelessness
- labour market and household dynamics
- social and demographic change.

James is currently working in the School of Demography on the ANU Social Cohesion project. This project involves researchers from disciplines across the University working to measure and analyse social cohesion within neighbourhoods and communities across Australia and develop and trial place-based interventions to improve cohesion.

James was awarded a PhD in Demography in December 2019. This research was focused on measuring and understanding the patterns, prevalence and dynamics of different types of housing and homelessness.
