Dr. Jean-marie André is HelpMeSee’s Medical Officer for Africa. He joins HelpMeSee with a historical and extensive experience in providing surgical training in West Africa which continues until today. An ophthalmologist with a specialty in cataract surgery, he established a training partnership through the Marseille School of Medicine with the West Africa region. This partnership has successfully trained over 50 cataract surgeons from West Africa to solve the problem of cataract blindness. He has trained several cataract surgeons in Manual Small Incision Cataract Surgery (MSICS) throughout Africa. He has also led a successful project called the ‘Phacokit Project.’ The phacokit (surgical equipment) is used widely in several West African countries. Dr. Jean-marie is renowned as an inventor and developer of surgical instruments for cataract surgery. He holds numerous patents for surgical instrumentation and serves as a leading consultant for cataract surgical instruments.
