Senior Lecturer in Geophysics, University of Bristol

Jessica Irving is a seismologist and Senior Lecturer at the University of Bristol. Her PhD, awarded by the University of Cambridge, investigated the seismic properties of Earth's inner core. In 2013, she joined the faculty of Princeton University in New Jersey, USA, and she moved to Bristol in 2020.

Jessica's research investigates the internal structure and evolution of Earth and other planets using a range of seismic techniques. Her work focusses on Earth's core and mantle, and she is a member of the NASA InSight science team which is exploring Mars's interior. She is also a member of the Earthscope-Oceans Science Committee, which focusses on seismic observations using floating MERMAID seismometers.
