Professor of American History, Western Washington University

My scholarship has emphasized the political and intellectual history of the early American republic. I have also written extensively about contemporary education reform at the K12 and higher levels.

I am author of three books:
1. What's the Point of College? Seeking Purpose in an Age of Reform (2019);
2. Democracy's Schools: The Rise of Public Education in America (2017); and
3. Creating a Nation of Joiners: Democracy and Civil Society in Early National Massachusetts (2008).
