Professor of Biomechanics, University of Regina

Dr. John Barden is a Professor in the Faculty of Kinesiology and Health Studies at the University of Regina. Dr. Barden’s expertise is in biomechanics and motor control, and his research interests focus on the use of wearable technology to assess human movement for both sport performance and digital health applications. Dr. Barden’s specific area of expertise is in competitive swimming, in which his research training in biomechanics is supplemented by his experience as a former competitive swimmer and coach. Dr. Barden has published biomechanics research articles on swimming, and his research has been funded by Own the Podium. From 2015-2018 he developed a sensor-based performance analysis system, Swimlytics, for Canada’s National Team and in 2018, received the Paragon Award of Innovation from the Regina Chamber of Commerce for the development of this system. He provides wearable tech. and sport science consulting services to coaches and athletes through the company Performance Insight (performanceinsight1@gmail.com).
