Professor of Physical Activity and Public Health Science, University of Strathclyde

I am an academic with expertise in physical activity and obesity in children. After doing a PhD in energy expenditure in the late 1980's I moved to the University of Glasgow, Scotland, where I worked in the Human Nutrition Department as Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, Reader and then Professor of Energy Metabolism in Children.Since 2011 I have worked at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, and my work now focuses on assessing how physically active children are, ways of increasing their physical activity, and understanding the effects of low levels of physical activity on health, well-being, and educational attainment.I have served on a number of national (UK) and international (Canadian; WHO) committees. These committees have developed strategies for obesity prevention in early life, and produced guidelines on healthy amounts of physical activity, screen time, and sleep in the early years.
