John Morrison's main research interests are concerned with Scottish painting from the seventeenth to the twentieth centuries. He has published widely on Scottish art and cultural history including Painting the Nation: Identity and Nationalism in Scottish Painting 1800-1920 (Edinburgh UP 2003), A Shared Legacy. Essays on Irish and Scottish Art (Ashgate Press, Aldershot 2005, with F. Cullen) and Painting labour in Scotland and Europe 1850-1900 (Ashgate Press 2014). He is currently working on a book on images of rural labour in Scotland.
